Two-Thirds of Universities Say Live Streaming a Top Priority
Wowza Media Systems released a survey of colleges and universities on the subject of live streaming, and found that it's a top priority for 66 percent. The majority of those questioned—63 percent—actively live stream on a weekly or daily basis, while 26 percent do so daily.
What are they using live video and audio for? The top three subjects are speakers, concerts, and events; commencement ceremonies; and sports. Campuses typically handle the backend themselves, with 96 percent saying internal staff manages the live streams.
Of the campuses that aren't yet offering live streams, 59 percent say they plan to begin live streaming next year.
According to Wowza, live streaming isn't just used to get work done at colleges and universities. It's a crucial way to engage students and alumni, and it helps universities differentiate their offerings from those of competing institutions.
"Higher education has been quick to adopt the technology, and our survey results suggest we're seeing just the tip of the iceberg," says David Stubenvoll, CEO and co-founder of Wowza.
