Hyper Debuts, a Hand-Curated App for Impactful Short-Form Video

Taking a video break with YouTube can quickly devolve into an hour lost on skateboarding stunts and Family Guy clips. For a more high-minded diversion, check out Hyper, a free app that launched today for iPads.

Hyper offers quality short-form videos, all of which have been hand-selected by the company's curators. Even better, they only put up about a dozen per day. Viewers won't find tens of thousands of clips to wade through. Genres covered include tech, culture, style, and events around the world.

Curators look for videos that offer compelling storytelling, visual appeal, strong production values, and journalistic relevance. Each day, they cull through thousands of sources to find the new daily dozen-or-so.

"We built Hyper to separate the signal from the noise and simply offer the best of the newest everyday,” says Hyper cofounder and CEO Markus Gilles. He calls the app an antidote to endless Netflix browsing or the YouTube rabbit hole.

Hyper was created with the assistance of a $1.1 million dollar seed round led by Advancit Capital, with participation by Lowercase Capital, Broadway Video Ventures, Freelance Ventures, and Mesa Ventures.

The company isn't focusing on monetization yet, Gilles said in an interview with Geektime, but will instead focus on perfecting the user experience.
